💎The Parent-Teacher Uses the Power of Vygotsky's ZPD - A Heartwarming Tale from Year One
During a chilly winter week, I had the joy of teaching a class of Year One children. However, needing coats zipped, hats on and gloves snugly in place, we faced a challenge: only 3 out of 28 six-year-olds could zip up their own coats.
Instead of zipping all 25 coats myself (and eating into their precious playtime), I decided to put Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) into action.
What Happened Next?

Step 1: Encouragement
I asked the children to try zipping their coats first—offering only to step in if they really couldn’t do it. -
Step 2: Small Wins
To my delight, 5 children managed it on their first try! They’d never even attempted it before, assuming it was too hard. -
Step 3: Peer Support
These little champions showed their friends how it was done. Soon, 4 more children mastered the skill—and they helped others too. -
Step 4: Progress
Within 5 minutes, only 6 coats remained unzipped—not because the children couldn’t do it, but because of tricky zips or coat designs.
By the end of the week, only 3 children still needed help—and even then, it was due to their coat design, not their ability.
What Is ZPD?
The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) is all about:

Tasks just out of reach that your child can master with guidance.

Building confidence through small, achievable steps.

Peer and mentor support to help them grow.
Whether it’s zipping a coat, solving a math problem, or learning a new skill, ZPD shows us that with the right support, children can achieve incredible things—one step at a time, with very little help.
The Magic of ZPD
This story is a perfect example of Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD)—the gap between what a child can do alone and what they can achieve with guidance and support.
With a little encouragement, peer support and the confidence to try, children can achieve so much more than we—or they—might expect. Even the tiniest win counts! That is what the Parent-Teacher Ethos is all about.
